This article is to show what you can really achieve from a small amount of money and some serious elbow grease.
I have been scouting for an outdoor dining table and chairs from a number of sale websites over the past few months; however, purely by luck, I managed to score this beautiful, poorly maintained dining set from a ‘friend of a friend’.
By restoring this furniture, I was able to save some serious dollars and also feel like I limited wastefulness – as this furniture was going to be thrown out.
To restore this set, it was as EASY as one, two, three:
- I was able to pick up the table and chairs using a friends ute, and was able to set up the pieces in my garage for the restoration phase;
- Sanding – I used both a hand and power sander to sand back the weathered and grotty wood #tip: make sure the area is well ventilated and you wear a mask and glasses, as the saw dust is not a pleasant feeling up your nose or in your eyes…;
- Staining! As this dinning set was originally stained and due to the type of wood that the furniture is made from, I used linseed oil to stain the furniture (instead of using nasty staining chemicals).
This activity took a solid two weekends of sanding and staining – the chairs were a nightmare, however, totally worth it though!
All in all, I think this is a project that anyone can do that benefits both your wallet and is realistically ‘sustainable’.
This article is to show anyone, that if you have a little bit of creativity and a willingness to not spend much and reuse/restore products, you can do anything!!
